Claudy Jongstra: “Ancient Wisdom” is a call to ecological action, prompted by the rapid loss of colour in the landscape and, consequently, the loss of the ancient wisdom required to cultivate, harvest and create pigments from natural dye plants in the future. As part of artist-activist Claudy Jongstra’s visual manifesto, “Guernica de la Ecología,” a detail of the artwork is used here to represent the earth. The vibrant, deep blue colour represents woad (European indigo), a natural dye plant that was grown for its valuable pigment during the time of the Dutch master painters and has disappeared since the introduction of synthetic pigments.
